The Brassiere Brassiere is derived from a french word meaning the upper arm, the brassiere is a mass-produced support garment worn by women and consists of two fabric cups attached to two side panels, a back panel, and shoulder straps (unless the garment is strapless). They are sized according to a grading system first introduced by Ida Rosenthal, the founder of Maidenform, in 1928. Two measurements are crucial in determining the bra size: 1st the chest circumference below the underarm, 2nd the fullest part of the breast. Cup size is calculated from the difference between the two measurements. And the greater the difference the larger the cup size. The Brassieres support the breasts, separate them, and give them shape. |
The Sweater Girl of the 1950s Brand names like Maidenform, Exquisite form, Berlei, Triumph and many other Bra manufacturers, all sold excellent bras that gave the correct pointed shape and circular stitch, conical shape of the era. The conical circle stitch bra of the 1950s, gave the support and silhouette for girls who longed to emulate the curves of film star sweater girls like Lana Turner, Marilyn Monroe, Jane Mansfield and Jane Russell, all famous for the cantilever bra. Bras began to be revolutionized by the use of nylon and the pointed pre formed conically stitched bra was actually a fashion accessory, and you would need one of these bras to give you that lovely sweater girl look. |
